Dietes iridioides (Butterfly Iris)

Dietes- Wild iris

Dietes iridioides is a tough clump forming perennial. The foliage is dark green, upright and quite stiff. Throughout spring and summer it produces iris like flowers on tall slender, yet strong stems.

Dietes are very strong growers in a range of climates and soil types. They really are quite indestructible! They can be used under trees where growing other plants can be difficult. They look fantastic planted around a pond or water feature. Alternatively they can be planted in mass for a striking display. Or used in large rockeries.

Can reach heights of 80cm and a spread of 1m. The clumps can easily be divided to create new plants. The will do well in sunny areas, as well as partly shaded sites under trees. They do best in well drained, moist soil but we’ve found they grow almost anywhere.

We propagate dietes using seed collected from plants in our garden. They can also be divided. Ours are grown out at our wholesale nursery located in Drouin, West Gippsland. Our plants are available in a 140mm pot. If you would like to buy Dietes iridioides please click the button below to check current availability and pricing.
